Project Euler Problem 11 Java

In this blog post we will be looking at problem 11 of Project Euler and we will program a solution in Java.

The problem of Project Euler found here, below is the problem for quick lookup.

In the 20×20 grid below, four numbers along a diagonal line have been marked in red.

The product of these numbers is 26 × 63 × 78 × 14 = 1788696.

What is the greatest product of four adjacent numbers in the same direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally) in the 20×20 grid?

What we need is a way to get the input numbers into the program where we can differnatiate them. I decided to use an array. Once you have these numbers formatted and in your program the solution is quite simple.

I decided to just use four two dimensional for loops to check all for required directions. We only need four directions instead of six since the horizontal(left/right) results would be the same regardless of the direction you would multiply them. This is the same for the vertical multiplication.

The horizontal for loop:

for (int i = 0; i < 20; i++) {
    for (int j = 0; j < 17; j++) {
        productHorizon = Grid[i][j] * Grid[i][j + 1] * Grid[i][j + 2] * Grid[i][j + 3];
        if (largest < productHorizon){
            largest = productHorizon;
        }
    }
}

The second for loop loops till 16(smaller than 17) because the array is from 0 to 19, And since you get the value of variable i plus 1/2/3 looping till 20/19/18 would cause an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException, this is true for the other loops too but with different conditions.

The vertical for loop:

for (int i = 0; i < 17; i++) {
for (int j = 0; j < 20; j++) {
productVertical = Grid[i][j] * Grid[i + 1][j] * Grid[i + 2][j] * Grid[i + 3][j];
if (largest < productVertical){
largest = productVertical;
}
}
}

The diagonal right for loop:

for (int i = 0; i < 17; i++) {
    for (int j = 0; j < 17; j++) {
        productDiagRight    = Grid[i][j] * Grid[i + 1][j + 1] * Grid[i + 2][j + 2] * Grid[i + 3][j + 3];
        if (largest < productDiagRight){
            largest = productDiagRight;
        }
    }
}

The diagonal left for loop:

for (int i = 0; i <17; i++) {
for (int j = 3; j < 20; j++) {
productDiagLeft = Grid[i][j] * Grid[i + 1][j - 1] * Grid[i + 2][j - 2] * Grid[i + 3][j - 3];
if (largest < productDiagLeft){
largest = productDiagLeft;
}
}
}

After these four for loops the variale named ‘largest’ contains the largest product. Check out the github for the full code.
